VEGAN

While vegans used to be known predominantly known as die-hard animal lovers and environmentalists, veganism is booming and growing in popularity. This plant-based diet excludes all animal products, including meat, dairy, and eggs. People lead vegan lifestyles for a variety of reasons, ranging from supporting animal rights to a having a desire for weight loss. Many people also take up a vegan diet for its environmental benefits such as decreasing massive amounts of greenhouse gases that are produced from cattle grazing.

Veganism used to be perceived as just another fad diet, however, due to its extensive benefits, its popularity is larger than ever. Many believe that unlike many other fad diets, veganism’s popularity is here to stay. Consider hopping on the bandwagon and trading in your next cheeseburger for a veggie burger!

PALEO

You can put your wooden bats away, because contrary to popular belief, the paleo diet isn’t just for cavemen! Although it is often referred to as the “caveman diet” or the “stone age diet,” the paleo diet simply focuses on eating foods that are similar to what humans ate during the Paleoithic era. The modern human diet changed and expanded after the development of farming, and some believe that this diet change was too late and rapid for digestive systems to adapt to it.

Followers of this diet often believe that the paleo diet best aligns with humans’ digestive systems. This meal plan includes eating foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, and lean meats, and excluding foods such as grains, legumes, dairy, refined sugar and salt. Try this diet if you’re not only looking for weight loss, but also health benefits such as improved glucose tolerance and better blood pressure control.

KETO

Warning: not for pastaholics! The keto diet is a very low-carb and high-fat diet. The reduction of carbs from your diet puts your body into a state of ketosis, which makes the body become incredibly efficient at burning fat for energy. If you live off of high-carb foods such as pasta, pizza, and bagels, the keto diet may not be for you. However, if you’re up for a challenge, people swear that this diet is worth the hype.

Keto has become increasingly trendy and A-list celebrities such as Kourtney and Kim Kardashian, Gwenyth Paltrow, Lebron James, and Halle Berry have endorsed the diet.

GLUTEN-FREE

With this diet, say goodbye to traditional bread, beer, baked goods and more. The gluten-free diet excludes anything containing the protein gluten, which can be found in grains such as wheat, barley, and rye.

Many people follow a gluten-free diet simply because they have an intolerance to foods containing gluten--celiac disease. People without gluten allergies follow this diet because it claims to assist in weight loss and increase one’s energy. However, there is a lot of speculation over whether people without gluten intolerances actually benefit from this diet and that weight loss is really just due to a decreased intake in carbohydrates.
